Spring Fabrics 101: How to Care for Linen, Silk, and Lightweight Blends

Springtime is one of the loveliest times of year in Tallahassee. Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, it's a time of renewal and growth. It's also time to pack away the sweaters and jackets, and pull out your more delicate and finer materials like silk, linen, and lightweight blends.

Just as those heavier materials need some special care before packing them away, your delicates do, too. Before you toss those silk blouses and linen pants in the washing machine, let's talk about proper cleaning methods. We want your fine fabrics to last as long as possible!

Linen: Keep It Crisp Without Damage

Linen is a warm-weather favorite for its lightweight, breathable qualities. It's ideal for warmer days when shorts and swimsuits just won't do. For all of its qualities, there is one thing about linen that makes caring for it difficult. It wrinkles and creases, seemingly from every movement.

When washing your linen pieces, you may encounter some common issues. The wrinkling is inevitable, and linen also has a tendency to shrink. Because it's a natural fiber, the colors also fade more quickly.

For casual linen garments, gentle machine washing in cool water will suffice. Iron while the item is slightly damp to steam out the wrinkles. For more structured garments, dry cleaning is the way to go. A professional cleaner can maintain the structure, keeping creases and seams crisp.

Always hang your linen items to avoid wrinkling. Avoid stuffing them into an overcrowded closet. Creases that set in are difficult to press out.

Silk: Handle With Gentle Care

Silk is one of the finest and most delicate fibers for clothing construction. Though many have tried to replicate its texture and qualities with synthetic fibers, there's nothing quite like the real thing.

Silk is smooth and light. It’s also prone to water spots and snags. This makes it tricky to clean at home. Some garments are okay to gently hand-wash and line-dry, but many indicate they benefit from professional cleaning. Silk garments also tend to be pricey, so it's worth the extra care to let the pros handle them.

If you choose to wash them at home, make sure you hang them to dry in a place out of direct sunlight. Light fades colors, and since silk is a natural fiber, it fades faster. Use padded, fabric hangers and hang your silk garments, always.

Lightweight Blends: Versatile But Vulnerable

Lightweight blends are common in the spring wardrobe. Materials such as poly-cotton, rayon blends, modal, and viscose are all popular. They tend to have a lovely drape and are breathable. They also have a tendency to wrinkle easily. Other issues in caring for these garments include shrinking, pilling, and color fading.

For casual pieces, most of the time, your lightweight blends are fine for the gentle cycle. You can iron or steam them to remove wrinkles, but be sure to use the correct ironing setting. These often require lower settings than cotton and linen, which can handle the heat.

For tailored items such as trousers, blazers, and structured pieces, dry cleaning will maintain the garment's integrity. While these materials are typically easygoing, wrinkling is more pronounced on tailored items. To keep those seams and creases sharp, professional cleaning and pressing are best.

Seasonal Care Tips

When you're unpacking your more delicate spring garments, do so with care.  These materials are lighter and tear more easily than synthetics or heavier natural fibers. Silk, in particular, is easy to snag. Those tiny snags can turn a beautiful garment into something you stash in the back of the closet for years.

Check for stains when you pull things out of storage. Hopefully, you did this step in the fall before putting them away, but those fall months can be extra busy. Take care of any stains, and be gentle and careful about steaming or pressing out creases from storage.
